The issue of gun control is one of the most controversial questions of our time with both sides of the discussion having wide-ranging support. So, what are the arguments for it?
The gun-control activists state that the limits on gun distribution will decrease the number of guns being used to kill people; I, however, doubt this idea very much. After all, a person who buys a gun legally never intends to use it in order to attack someone – at least, it is so in 99% of cases, otherwise there would have been many more “shootings” in public places than there are now. Only people who buy weapons illegally are going to use them for criminal activity, and they will be still buying and using them if you ban their legal selling.
The only result such a ban may lead to is the situation in which criminals possess firearms they can use and know that law-abiding citizens have nothing to retaliate with. It means that the state is only protecting the ones it is supposed to fight against.
And finally, it simply doesn’t say a lot of good about a country that is so afraid of its own citizens that deprives them of any ability to protect themselves. The law enforcers are very rarely present at the scene of crime when it is committed – and it is the only thing citizens are told to rely on.
