Plagiarizing is one of the major problems that universities have with students. It is really good to my mind that this problem is widely recognized, as it allows to state that there are actions taken to defend the copyright and make sure that the students earn their grades on their own and for their own accomplishments. So, what are the ways to reveal plagiarism and how it can be punished today in the US universities?
Although plagiarism is not a kind of crime, it is generally frowned upon and results in different negative consequences. Each university has its own policy according to the punishment that plagiarism presupposes in accordance with its level and the number of times the student is caught doing it. Usually, for the first-time plagiarism the punishment varies from a formal warning to rejection of assignment. In cases of severe plagiarizing, the punishment can be even expulsion from the university.
So, it is clear that plagiarizing can lead to serious consequences. But how is it established that students resort to this practice? In the past, it was quite a challenge, as professors had to rely on their knowledge and experience to reveal plagiarism. Today everything is much simpler – there are online systems that help not only define word-by-word plagiarizing, but also paraphrasing. Some systems even have a possibility to check copy/paste not only on the web, but among the works previously submitted to the university by students.
